  • What is the best way to dispose of construction waste?

A roll-off dumpster is the best way to get rid of construction waste. These containers offer an easy and reliable way to keep debris contained.

At Mass Green Waste, we offer a wide range of dumpster sizes for different types and amounts of waste. Contact us today to reserve your rental!

  • How can I find the right size dumpster for a construction job?

Trust the team at Mass Green Waste to offer weight calculators to help you determine the dumpster with the proper volume and weight capacity for debris such as concrete, asphalt, roofing shingles, drywall, plaster, or carpet.

  • Why do dumpster weight limits matter?

Even if the volume of your debris fits inside the rented container, the debris's weight might surpass the dumpster's weight limit.

For instance, a 20-yard dumpster should only be filled halfway with heavy materials like concrete or dirt. If you exceed the maximum weight limit, you may face extra charges.

Therefore, always consider both the type and weight of your materials when selecting a dumpster size.

The concrete and asphalt weight calculator can also be utilized for brick, dirt, gravel, and similar materials.

  • How much does a yard of concrete or asphalt weigh?

The weight of concrete and asphalt depends on the square footage and thickness of the material.

Typically, a cubic yard of solid concrete weighs approximately 4,050 pounds (~2 tons), or 150 pounds per cubic foot. Solid asphalt weighs a bit less at 3,960 pounds per cubic yard.

However, broken concrete and asphalt weigh around 2,025 pounds (~1 ton) per cubic yard, or 75 pounds per cubic foot, when thrown into a dumpster because of the empty space.

When getting rid of either material, utilize our concrete weight calculator to figure out the appropriate dumpster for asphalt and concrete disposal.

  • What materials are allowed in a dumpster?

There are certain items that cannot be disposed of in a dumpster because of safety hazards and local regulations. If you're unsure if a particular item can be thrown in a dumpster, contact us!

    • Household Junk: In some regions, you might incur a per-item disposal charge if you throw appliances and electronics into a dumpster, depending on local regulations.
    • Wooden Furniture: Tables, chairs, and bookcases made of wood are generally accepted, but it's important to inquire about upholstered furniture like couches and recliners, as not all locations will take them. Keep in mind that in certain areas, there may be an extra fee for disposing of furniture due to local regulations.
    • Brick, Asphalt, & Concrete: Mass Green Disposal provides specialized dumpsters for heavy materials in locations where we accept them, such as brick, asphalt, broken concrete, and concrete block, for proper disposal.
    • Construction & Home Improvement Debris: You can almost always throw away debris from building, demolition and home improvement projects in a construction dumpster.
    • Lumber: Untreated wood and lumber from construction projects, including two-by-fours and studs, can typically be disposed of in a dumpster. However, treated lumber, such as railroad ties, is generally not permitted in roll off containers. Shingles, including underlayment, tiles, plywood, and other roofing debris can be placed in a roofing dumpster.
  • What materials are not allowed in a dumpster?

Although rules may differ for certain materials, there are specific items that are not permitted to be disposed of in a dumpster anywhere. These items include refrigerators, tires, chemicals, car batteries, railroad ties, and any other materials that are hazardous, pose a significant safety risk, or could potentially damage the container.

Read on to find out how to manage waste materials that are not allowed in your roll-off dumpster.

    • Refrigerators: Refrigerators cannot be put in a dumpster due to the toxic refrigerant they contain. They can be disposed of through your local sanitation department's bulk debris pickup program. In some areas, refrigerators can be thrown away in a dumpster if they have been properly drained by an HVAC professional.
